As part of their unit on energy, East Broadway Elementary School fourth graders engaged in a Doodle SnowBot STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) project on Dec. 11. The fourth grade classes gathered in the school's cafeteria where they were placed in small groups. While working together, each group was challenged to design a Doodle SnowBot that could draw while skating around a large sheet of paper.

The energy project required students to communicate, collaborate and problem solve as they built their creations. Using a plastic cup, markers, glue, duct tape, a mini fan/motor and a battery holder, the goal was to design a device that would transfer energy from electricity into the energy of motion. Students first brainstormed their design ideas and drew their thoughts in their project packets. They then worked together to put their ideas in motion. While using their motor, the fourth graders tried different ways to get their SnowBot to draw circles on the paper. With every trial run, they made adjustments to their designs. Fourth grade teachers and Levittown Science Director Kevin McDermott walked around to assist the students.

"My favorite part was building the SnowBot. It was really fun," said fourth grader Kaitlin Lynch. "I learned that you have to listen to other people and be open to trying their ideas."
