Trenton Road Bridge Closing For Four Months

PennDOT is making "high-priority" repairs on the Route 295 bridge in Middletown Township. Detours are in place starting Wednesday.

MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP, PA —The heavily-traveled Trenton Road Bridge will undergo repairs starting Wednesday that will have it closed for four months, PennDOT said.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said it is making regional bridge repairs on Route 95 under a $44.6 million bridge improvement project to perform "high-priority repairs" on several structures on Route 95 and Route 295.

Starting Wednesday, Trenton Road will be closed and detoured 24/7 over Route 295 between Route 413 (Veterans Highway) and Bensalem Boulevard in Middletown Township and Hulmeville Borough, PennDOT said.

PennDOT said the closure was originally planned to start Monday.

The work on the 217-foot-long span, which was built in 1968, is expected to last through Sept. 11.

Detours have been set up for during the closure with motorists being directed to use Route 413 (Veterans Highway), New Falls Road, and Bensalem Boulevard.

Nearly 12,000 vehicles pass over the bridge daily, PennDOT said.

Middletown Township Police said the road would be accessible to local traffic.

"The closure is to allow PennDOT to perform critical and needed repairs to the bridge," police posted on Facebook. "Please follow the posted detour routes. The closure is expected to last until at least early September, and possibly longer depending on the extent of repairs needed. It goes without saying that the best plan of action is to do your best to avoid this area entirely during the repair project. But if you have to travel it, please be patient —very patient —and exercise caution."

PennDOT said drivers should allow extra time when traveling through or near all the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent and subject to change.

Repairs to the structures under this project include replacing rocker bearings, frozen sliding plate bearing plate bearings, and deck expansion joints, cleaning and painting steel beams, repairing substructure concrete, and reconstructing bearing pedestals.

Driscoll Construction Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
