LIMERICK, PA — The convenience chain Sheetz has proposed to build a new store and fueling center in Limerick Township on the same block as an existing Wawa. It would represent the chain's first investment in a store in the greater Philadelphia area, as they have largely avoided the region due to their long standing and iconic rivalry with Wawa.

The Limerick Township Board of Supervisors held a public hearing over the proposal on Tuesday night.

The Sheetz would be at the chaotic intersection of Ridge Pike and Swamp Pike. The existing super Wawa, which also has a gas station, is just a short walk away from the proposed site almost directly across the street.

Potential issues addressed include increased traffic in the area, conflict with Wawa, and changes that will need to be made to the site to facilitate the new Sheetz.

Sheetz and Wawa have represented a mostly friendly rivalry between eastern and western Pennsylvania, though each have made small incursions into the other's territories. Sheetz stretches as far east as the Outer Banks, but they haven't gotten closer to the Philly area than Reading in Berks County and Easton in Northampton County.

The issue will be addressed again at the next Limerick Township Board of Supervisors meeting on March 4.
