Boys Golf Season Recap

A look back at the season that was for boys golf with head coach Jeff Mast.

Record: 9-5 (8-5)

Postseason: . John Foley, Tyler Keim, Detweiler went to ; Foley and Keim made it to , but did not advance to regionals. Team did not qualify past day one of districts (10th out of 13 - only one team goes).

Awards/Accomplishments: Foley, a freshman, was the lowest scoring PAC-10 golfer at districts and missed going to regionals by one stroke. "I tell the kids, it's probably tougher to get to regionals from District One than to get from regionals to states, just because of the intense competition we have here in District One golf," said head coach Jeff Mast.

Major Injuries: "No, we were pretty lucky in that respect, although at the end of the season, Eric Rowell, who played J.V. at the beginning of the season and midway through played varsity, and was probably at that point had the third best average on our team, but hurt his shoulder. He didn't play the last few matches. That was the only injury we had to deal with this year."

Overall Impressions: "I only had the four seniors that came back, who didn't have a lot of experience. All in all, they had one year of varsity under their belt, and for a lot of them, they didn't play varsity all last season. The only real returning varsity player for us was . Lack of experience was the only real concern I had at the beginning of the year. Our goal was to be better than we were at the beginning of the season by the end and I think we accomplished that. We had a strong ending to the season."

Best Match: "Beating Boyertown in the semifinals up at Hickory Valley was pretty good. Almost beating Methacton during the regular season. We had some matches early, like against Phoenixville where we shot a 262 and followed it up with a good one with Pottstown, but kind of got off track in the middle. We ended on a decent note as well. Believe it or not, losing to Methacton on the road and then beating Boyertown were our two best ones, other than that Phoenixville one being our low score of the year."

Worst Match: "Well, probably our worst match of the year might have been Owen J. [Roberts] at home. We were averaging somewhere in the 260s at that point and we shot somewhere in the 290s for that one. Owen J.'s a pretty solid team. They have some nice players. But, when you're playing at home, you should have a little bit of an advantage. That was probably the low point."

Story of the Year: "I think Bennett Detweiler being a sophomore winning the PAC-10 championship surprised a lot of people. There were a lot of good players. Methacton, Boyertown had a lot of good players. There were juniors and seniors there that had been there before. And Bennett, only his second time playing in that, winning was probably a good story. John Foley, a freshman, shooting an even par to qualify at districts, that surprised a lot of people two. So those two young guys are back for a few years and that's a good place to be."

Thoughts on Next Year: "Well, we had 12 kids play varsity this year at one point or another. Some kids played one or two, others four or five. I have two of the better kids in the league. The kids from Methacton, they're probably some of the better golfers in the league. A lot of those seniors will be graduating, but Bennett and John will certainly be two of the premier golfers next year in the league. That's something I look forward to."

Unexpected Leader/Player: "I firmly believe that you're only as good as your senior leadership. I expressed that to the guys all year long. Tyler Keim, I thought, really stepped it up by the end of the year. He got better and better as the season progressed. All the seniors did pretty good, but Tyler was the one that stepped it up a notch above the other ones. He worked hard in practice, he had a good time, he didn't goof off, he tried his best, he had a competitive nature, he wanted to win his matches. That all seemed to elevate his game a bit and he turned out to be our leader by the end of the season.

"Dan Walbach, a junior, stepped up at the end, too."

Seniors Next Year: Walbach, Anthony Bardeen and Eric Rowell.

Last Thoughts: "At the beginning of our season, our goal was to win a PAC-10 Championship and right at the end of the season we had the opportunity to do those things. We wanted to reach districts on . So, we reached some goals that we wanted to fulfill. We came up a little short on winning the championship and sending a kid to states - things like. But, all in all, it was a really successful season and I was really pleased with the kids' effort."
