Fall Plumbing Tips

Fall plumbing tips. Preventive maintenance can help prevent major problems from frozen pipes.

Over the past week we have seen temperatures begin to drop. Before the freezing temperatures come around, take an afternoon to make sure you protect your pipes from freezing and cracking:

  • Unhook all of your outdoor hoses. Drain the hoses before putting them away.
  • Check outdoor faucets for leaks or drips. If you see any, call a plumber to make repairs, even a small leak can cause major damage when the pipe freezes.
  • Use a styrofoam spiget cover to help protect the faucet. These are usually very inexpensive.
  • Check exposed pipes in your basement, crawlspace and garage. Take the time to wrap pipes, especially those near outside walls, with insulation.

Taking a fall afternoon to do some preventive maintenance just may save you a lot of problems when the temperatures drop below freezing.
