Meet Treya: An Abused Dog Finds Her Forever Home

Once horribly abused, Treya is now safe, happy and thriving in her new forever home.

I first learned of Treya, a young pit bull, when she was brought into All 4 Paws Rescue in late summer of this year.  She had been found wandering the streets of Philadelphia and picked up by the Animal Care and Control Team, better known as ACCT.  She was covered in chemical burns over much of her body and her front left leg was severely fractured and infected.  The officers and veterinarians responsible for her care believed her leg injury had been caused by being hit car and then drug it.

ACCT treated her burns and amputated her leg, but could not find a rescue willing to take her.  She was days away from being euthanized when All 4 Paws took her in and placed her in a safe and loving foster home to recover. Every day I would read about Treya's progress and every day I would cry over the hell she had been through and for all the other animals still suffering similar fates.  Although I had just adopted a rescue weeks before, I was considering adopting her knowing I could give her the kind of life she deserved.  I soon found out that after her recovery, she would be going home with her new family made up of an amazing mom, Robyn Sutton, human brother, Nate, two canine siblings and two cats.

Robyn says despite her history, Treya's transition into their home was surprisingly easy.  She was already housebroken and loved everyone she met.  She even fit right in with her new canine siblings. The cats were another story, but they are learning to coexist.

As happy as she was to be part of her new family, she still had a ways to go in her recovery from the abuse.  She was always panting and needed to rest often.  Learning to walk on three legs was hard work, but she was persistent and refused to let it get her down.  As the months went by, she gradually gained weight and was able to play longer without needing to rest.  Treya loves to play and go for walks. Her favorite game is playing "hide and seek" with Nate.  He will hide toys and tell her to find them.  She also enjoys training and is eager to please.  Treya and Robyn have been working with trainer Dave Cugno of Cugno's Canine Center.  With Dave's help, Treya has made great progress. The cats also appreciate his help because they can now roam free through out the house without being chased by Treya! They continue to work on Treya becoming more comfortable with dogs outside of their family and Robyn's goal for Treya is to get the Canine Good Citizen title from the American Kennel Club.

Robyn says Treya has been a great role model for her son and the children that have spent time with her.  They see how persistent she is and how her horrible past and having lost one of her legs has not broken her spirit.  Robyn and Nate opened their home and hearts to a dog that most people would not even consider taking in.  They have shown her love, patience and acceptance.  They meet her every need and have walked right beside her through her recovery.

I look forward to watching this beautiful girl live a long, happy life with her forever family.
