School Bullying Prevention Starts at Royersford Chesterbrook Academy

Are you concerned about your child’s social life?  Do you fear that your child shows too much aggression or doesn’t stand up for himself in some situations, like you feel he needs to?  These are concerns that Nobel Learning Communities, Inc. has heard from parent surveys, and with the media’s focus on bullying, we have decided to implement a more comprehensive curriculum on emotional development with our students.  It is our goal to provide our students with the necessary knowledge and tools they need to become socially competent, focus on their academic future, and have a positive, self motivated persona. 

School bullying can be physical, emotional, or verbal.  It can happen at any given time of the day or in any area of a school.  It can occur one on one between two students, or it can occur as a group of student focusing on one individual or another group of individuals.  Sometimes children are persuaded to become involved in bullying because they don’t want to be the next victim, or the peer pressure is an encouraging factor for them to participate.  With the implementation of the new addition to our program, we are hoping that we will reduce the chances of our students being the “bullies” and provide them with a comprehensive knowledge basis on the appropriate mannerism of treating other individuals, while being sensitive to their emotional needs. 

As early childhood educators, we at Chesterbrook Academy feel it is our personal responsibility to provide our students with the opportunities to learn their basic needs, instill in them the necessary concepts to grasp life in a positive demeanor, and build upon all of their experiences.  As we all know, early childhood education is the education provided to students prior to entering the formal elementary school years, prior to 5 years old.  There have been numerous studies that early childhood education has provided the underlying basis for yielding, stimulating and instilling positive behaviors and social growth, and setting students up for success in their future education as well as adults in our communities.    At this time, we find that it is important to instill within our students the positive learning aspects and provide them with the tools to set a good example as leaders in our schools, communities, and organizations.

It is our goal at Chesterbrook Academy to start the reduction of school bullying and instill in our students the importance of positive behaviors, recognizing the emotions of their peers as well as their own.  This year we will be adding a new component to our Links to Learning Curriculum for our 4 year old students and above.   Based on the curriculum of Second Step, we have made it our goal to provide students with developmentally appropriate learning opportunities to teach core social-emotional skills such as empathy, emotion management, and problem solving.  This addition to our program will assist students and provide them with the opportunity to learn self-regulation and executive-function skill.  Our students will learn the skills to manage their feelings, make friends, and solve problems. Short daily activities include Brain Builder games, songs, and puppets.  

By implementing this addition core curriculum basis in our Pre-K and Kindergarten classes, it is our goal to provide students with the opportunities for successful education interactions for the rest of their lives.  It has been noted that by intervening this curriculum enhancement in programs, we will be setting the children up for social competence and pro-social behaviors, as well as see a decline in depression and anxious behaviors.
