Brooke Elementary students face faculty in hoops showdown
The 13 students were given the opportunity to play in the game by raising more than $12,000 to combat heart disease.
The top 13 student fundraisers during a February charity event at Brooke Elementary School collected their reward on Friday: a basketball showdown against their teachers.
From February 7-14, students at Brooke jumped rope to combat heart disease at the school's annual "Jump Rope for Heart" event. The proceeds raised during this event, which is held in February during American Heart Month, go to the American Heart Association to benefit heart disease research and treatment. The fundraising goal for the school was $10,000.
Brooke students far exceeded that goal, collecting $12,178.85. To congratulate them, physical education teacher Joelle Bieber organized the student/staff basketball game.

Assisted by a generous scoring handicap—their baskets were worth two points, while faculty baskets were only worth one point—the students prevailed by a final score of 26-25.
The game's halftime entertainment featured a dance-off between two faculty members.

Bieber leads the "Jump Rope for Heart" event each year. The students compete in a jumping circuit and collect donations from family and friends to participate. "Jump Rope for Heart" is meant to teach students how to get their hearts pumping, promote physical activity and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
"Jump Rope For Heart is a great way for the students to not only improve their own fitness level but also to show that we can truly make a difference in our community," said Bieber.
