Dr. Robert J Funk Informs You About Dentures!

I find that fabricating dentures is one of the most enjoyable parts of my practice. The interesting thing is that when I was just coming out of school I thought that making the dentures was one of the easier procedures to preform……no drills or needles, but the more dentures I made and the more experienced I became I found that dentures became more complex and not as straight forward as I thought when I was younger.

I became more and more aware of the subtleties that were important in making a denture seem natural and life like. Subtleties like the lips showing a glimpse of teeth on a slight smile, and the lower teeth mirroring the lower lip, eliminating dark spaces at the corner of the mouth during a wide smile.

Patients and non patients often ask me about the differences in denture pricing….what is the difference in expensive dentures and inexpensive dentures? After all teeth are teeth…..right? In my mind that’s where the subtleties come in..does your denture look natural, does it move around a lot, is your dentist available for corrections and are you being charged for it, did you get to see your denture before it was fabricated, did your family get to see it before it was fabricated? A denture lasts longer than a car and yet people will pay for a cheap pair of dentures before they will buy a cheap car. Our dentures cost approximately $4000 which is a great price for a car……except your car only lasts 4 to 6 years and cost almost ten times as much. In my opinion dentures are the one thing you should want to pay good money for because you use them every day, they affect the way you look and speak, and they will last for many years without much maintenance.

At our office we have the patients take their denture home before the final fabrication so they can look at them outside of the office and let other people they trust look at them and comment on the look of the dentures. The dentures can be brought back to the office and corrections will be made and the patients can try them in again to make sure the look is what they want.
