Evans Elementary School students get on board with bus safety lessons

LIMERICK - As part of Bus Safety Week, kindergartners and first-graders received a visit from the Montgomery County Health Department representatives who taught the children the safest ways to board and ride a school bus.

On Oct. 17, 18 and 20, county Health Department officials Katie Kucz and Kelsey Stenger reminded Evans students about rules for getting on and off the bus safely, proper bus riding etiquette, how to cross the street when getting on or off a bus, and how to behave at the bus stop. The county receives funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to present bus, pedestrian and child passenger safety programs.

Students left the program with written material from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Traffic Injury Prevention Project to take home and discuss with their families.

"In an effort to promote health and safety at Evans, we frequently bring in outside speakers to talk with children about what they can do to protect themselves in many different types of situations," said Certified School Nurse Laura McNeil. "Katie and Kelsey brought a message that resonated with our students, many of whom board buses each day to get here. The practical lessons they taught our children will no doubt help prevent accidents that can occur when kids get on and off the bus."

Evans Elementary School is located at 125 Sunset Road in Limerick.
