Gay student group finds funding, approval expected next week

The group is one of three student clubs that can be funded through the elimination of a defunct radio club.

The Gay-Straight Student Alliance at Spring-Ford High School may not be an unofficial student club for very much longer.

The elimination of a defunct radio club at the school will free up $1,400 that can be used to fund the operation of the Gay-Straight Student Alliance and two other clubs, Spring-Ford Superintendent Dr. Marsha Hurda said tonight at a meeting of the school board's extracurricular committee.

"I think―I hope―what the board was asking us [district administration] to do involved finding a way to do this without spending any more money, and, lo and behold, there's the radio club [funds] that will allow that to occur," Hurda said.

"That's great. Okay. I'm fine with that. Thank goodness, as usual, Dr. Hurda, you and your team has found ways to be creative," said committee chair and school board member David Shafer.

Hurda recommended that the approval of the three clubs be placed on the agenda for the school board's next meeting on Monday, February 21.

"I would recommend that we confirm who the [faculty] advisors would be for the three clubs and put that on the agenda for next week for approval," Hurda said.

The other two clubs that are expected to be approved are the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Ultimate Frisbee club, which had applied for recognition last year but was rejected due to lack of funding.
