A lot of people join the program to lose weight...and really that's a great start but Corefit Pact subscribes to a philosophy of whole food nutrition for health... luckily thrilling and sustainable weight loss follows as a result.
Here is a letter from a current PACT member about what she gained in addition to the weight loss!
I have been on a journey with my weight and body issues for as long as I can remember. When I first joined the CoreFit Pact team, it was because I had finally felt like this was the last step of my journey. I was really feeling good both emotionally and physically. To me, this was the final step in taking back control and perhaps losing the "last 10 pounds". I really just wanted to clean up my eating and meet some new people.
I have been an avid athlete for over 25 years. I began fitness as a way to handle stress and I fell in love with it. My activity of choice was running, but I would try anything, just for fun. This passion led me to obtain my personal training certification as well as Yoga, Pilates and many others. I taught for many years at various gyms and studios and trained clients privately. I did not pay that much attention to what I ate, because I always "worked it off".
Once I made the switch to a low carb/no grain diet, I began to not feel well. I became aware of how much carbohydrate I actually ate to fuel my day. For the first few weeks, we thought it was just a severe detox of the sugars and carbs. Joymarie and Liz tried to convince me to back off of my exercise to get through it. I was losing weight slowly and would even gain a pound or so during a couple of the weeks.
I was getting frustrated, my energy levels were tanking and I felt lousy. Joymarie and Liz were as confused as I was and tried to tweak my program every few days. After a lot of research, they urged me to make an appointment with an allergist and push my primary doctor to run a more in depth thyroid study. (I currently take medication for low thyroid function.) Things just did not make sense! My primary doctor was not convinced but ran the thyroid test as well as an additional Vitamin D level. As it turns out, my thyroid is not functioning as it should and my medication needed to be adjusted! My vitamin D levels were low and my other metabolic numbers were within the normal range, but some were very low normal and I needed supplements! The allergist also alerted me to numerous food allergies, the biggest of which is almonds, pork and legumes (esp. peas and string beans) and a borderline peanut allergy. I had been consuming all of these foods multiple times a day and this was the reason that I felt so horrible. Because of my already compromised auto immune system (from my low thyroid and excessive training), the allergic reaction from the foods have affected my auto immune system. I did not get your typical hives or respiratory problems that you might expect. I was not absorbing the nutrients from the food I was eating and I was unable to fuel my body.
It has only been a few days since I eliminated all these foods and I am beginning to feel better already. My energy has improved a bit and I don't have the deep aches in my body. It will take several months to fully clear my system and adjust to new thyroid medication and it may take longer to get back to a regular training routine. I had probably masked my symptoms by eating a high carbohydrate diet in an effort to fuel my body and feel good.
Some people might ask me why I would continue with the program when I felt so awful. My answer to this question is that it actually helped turn around my failing health. For the first time in my life, I felt that I was not "crazy". I had been told for years that I was just under a lot of stress or had a lot on my plate with raising four kids. That I needed to get more sleep and maybe stop running so much. I have been given the tools to search for the information that I need through this 8 week program. It has given me the confidence to push the medical doctors to get me the answers that I need and it has enabled me to take control of my own health and well being. Although, I was part of a group going through this process, the individual attention that I received with regards to my own individual health, I could not get anywhere else. They never gave up, even though I may have felt like doing just that. They were the only people who stuck with it and identified what my health issues were. ( I had been complaining to my doctor for years about not feeling well and had never gotten any results.) You truly need both aspects to be successful. I would absolutely recommend this program (and I have) to anyone looking to improve their health and well being.
