Hurda: Last day of school for Spring-Ford still June 14

Additional snow days may require the district to add school days to the calendar.

The last day of school for students in the Spring-Ford Area School District is June 14.  This has been well known to anyone with a copy of the school calendar, but Spring-Ford Superintendent Dr. Marsha Hurda said a number of parents have contacted the district to ask about the impact of snow days on the calendar.

"As of right now, the calendar will not change," Hurda said.

"There are 184 student days built into the current calendar. Three of them are built in for weather-related events, and there's one additional day that we always build in as an emergency day. As of right now, we've used four days [for weather-related closures]. If we have no more snow, our calendar will remain the same. That means the last day of school for students would be June 14," Hurda said.

Hurda said additional weather-related closures will mean extending the school calendar or holding classes on a day when school is currently scheduled to be closed.

"However, if additional days are required as a result of weather events, we will have to come back together and look at how we will readjust the calendar. We must have 180 student days per the school code," Hurda said.

"Our intention is not to affect the spring holiday [break] in any way," Hurda said.

School board president Joseph Ciresi joked that winter was probably over.

"According to the groundhog, I think it's over," Ciresi said.
