PILLARS OF LIGHT AND LOVE HOSTS SOCIAL EVENT FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

March 20th Event a success!

On March 20th, local Non-Profit, Pillars of Light and Love hosted a free event, A Very Special Afternoon: A Social Event for Those With Special Needs, at the Empowering U Center in Trappe, PA.

The afternoon event was for those with Special Needs, their families and caregivers who enjoyed snacks, dancing, karaoke and games. The families enjoyed socializing with others who live with the daily challenges and labors of love of caring for individual who is “differently-abled”. Guests were children age 5 to over 65. Siblings also enjoyed games with volunteers who also brought their children to help out with the event. The guests enjoyed dancing the Cha Cha Slide, the Chicken Dance and singing Karaoke while playing inflatable musical instruments and tambourines. Games included a bean bag toss, indoor mini golf and bowling. But their favorite part was dancing with each other, and their parents!

Kathy Opperman, Founder and President of Pillars of Light and Love, explains how the event came to be. “I was approached by a mother of a child with Autism who said they do not have any social events like a dance for their teen to attend and feel free to be themselves. They were looking for an event where family members could join in the fun. So we created it and we were very pleased with the outcome,” says Opperman. “I received several testimonials on Facebook and private after the event where parents said they haven’t seen their child smile in months. Another said her daughter kept saying ‘Best dance ever’ with a smile on her face all the way home in the car.” Adds Opperman, “Our organization is focused on Life and Stress Management and can deliver workshops and events catered to needs in the Community. We are putting together a Young Gentleman’s and Young Ladies Club based on requests we have received. Kids and Adults today are stressed and do not have enough fun in their lives. We want to change that while giving them the tools to cope with life and teach confidence and healthy self-esteem!”
