Red Sox Start Touney, Defeat Whitpain

The Region Three tournament began on Saturday at Owen J. Roberts as the Pennsylvania state tournament qualifier, hosted by NorChester Youth Athletic League, provided some fireworks. There were seven home runs hit on the day and a barrage of base hits through out the afternoon into the evening.

Lower Montgomery County league champion Fort Washington defeated Philadelphia league champion Olney by nine runs. Lower Bucks champion Bristol beat Wayne Legion in a seven inning game by 10 runs.

Both Chester County league entries Spring City and NorChester thrashed opponents with mercy rule shortened games. Spring City had three innings in a row where it sent at least nine men to the plate to propel the Red Sox to the winners’ bracket semifinal.

The win marked the first time in five tournaments that the defending state champions emerged from a first round game unscathed.

In the nightcap, NorChester played unruly host, crushing four round trippers, two by St. Joseph recruit Tim Ponto in a 13-0 shut out win. He had 15 hits. Catcher Dave Raifsnider fell a triple short of hitting for the cycle.
