Sources: Jani-King Quits at Spring-Ford

Janitorial service firm Jani-King abruptly stopped working for the Spring-Ford Area School District on Friday, according to sources close to school district administration. It was not immediately clear why the firm quit. Neither Jani-King nor Spring-Ford Area Superintendent David Goodin immediately returned calls on Friday afternoon.

The school district sent the following statement to Patch late Friday afternoon in response to inquiries about the Jani-King situation:

"The topic of Jani-King will be discussed at an upcoming board meeting. Nothing is official until the board takes action on it."

Jani-King's Philadelphia office is based out of Norristown. In 2011, when planning for this year's budget, the board of education made the decision to lay off 29 maintenance employees in favor of Jani-King. The topic has since repeatedly been a source of controversy and heated public comment at district board meetings.

At the May 21 board meeting, Board President Tom DiBello said the finance committee had projections of Jani-King saving the district between $1 and $1.1 million for the 2011-12 school year. He also said that to date, the service has saved the district approximately $875,000.
