Royersford Woman Killed While Biking In Ohio Triathlon

A Royersford woman competing in the Ironman Triathlon in Ohio this weekend was struck while biking and killed.

ROYERSFORD, PA — A Royersford woman competing in the Ironman Triathlon in Ohio this weekend was struck while biking and killed, authorities and event organizers said.

Kristen Oswald, 44, was biking in the northbound right lane of U.S. 23 in Delaware, Ohio, at around 9 a.m. Sunday.

She was struck from behind by Freightliner commercial tractor-trailer that was headed northbound in the left lane of U.S. 23.

The incident occurred shortly after the bike portion of the race began.

"Our condolences go out to the athlete’s family and friends, whom we will continue to support," Ironman said in a statement released after the incident. "We are continuing to work with local and state authorities to gather all the details of how this incident occurred and will assist them in any way possible."

Oswald was outside of the safety zone provided on the road by the event when she was struck, according to Ohio outlet WBNS.

Oswald was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was not injured.

The investigation remains underway.
