Ohio Family Killings: Slayings Were 'Pre-Planned Execution,' AG Says

Authorities found marijuana grow operations at three of the four crime scenes.

PIKETON, OH - The execution-style murder of eight members of the Rhoden family in Ohio was a preplanned and sophisticated operation, Ohio Attorney General Michael DeWine told reporters on Sunday.

DeWine along with Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader provided an update on the investigation into the killing of the family members. DeWine stressed that while authorities would provide updates into the process of the investigation they would not be able to share specific results.

However, DeWine confirmed that authorities found marijuana grow operations at three locations at the crime scene.

DeWine said investigators had combed through over 100 tips, conducted between 50 and 60 interviews and executed five search warrants. He added that 18 pieces of evidence have been collected from the crime scenes that are being sent to the BCI crime lab.

Reader said there was no greater threat to the public. He said he had spoken with the Rhoden family, who were specifically targeted in the attack, and advised them to be armed. He added that members of the general public concerned for their safety should arm themselves.

Authorities did not confirm whether more than one shooter was behind the murders. DeWine said they were not releasing further details to keep the "bad guys" from finding out what investigators know.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich continues to be briefed on the murders. On Saturday, authorities identified the eight family members killed in the shooting and released two 911 calls. Seven adults and a 16-year-old were killed in the shooting.

A $25,000 reward is being offered by Cincinnati-area businessman Jeff Ruby for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of any person(s) responsible for the killings. Anyone with information can contact 1-855-BCI-OHIO or the Pike County Sheriff's office at 740-947-2111.
