Montco Man, Marine Killed In Arizona Helicopter Crash
One of the two Marines killed in a crash in Arizona has been identified as a Montgomery County native.
AMBLER, PA — One of the two Marines killed in a helicopter crash in Arizona over the weekend was a Montgomery County man, the military announced on Monday evening.
Major Matthew M. Wiegand, 34, a native of Ambler, was among those killed.
The crash, which occurred during a training mission in the desert outside of Yuma, remains under investigation. The pair were flying a AH-1Z Viper helicopter.

Wiegand was serving as a pilot with Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One and was based out of Marine Corps Air Station Yuma.
Also killed in the crash was Captain Travis W. Brannon, 30, of Nashville.

The pair were flying as part of a Weapons and Tactics Instructor course, according to the Marine Corps.
Wiegand is the second local Marine who lost his life in a training accident recently. Captain Sam Schultz, 28, an Abington High School graduate and Huntingdon Valley native, was killed in a crash in April 2018.
