PA's COVID Cases In Children: County By County Breakdown

Overall numbers are improving, but the case rate among children is 10 times more than it was at this time a year ago. Details:

PENNSYLVANIA — The overall COVID-19 situation in Pennsylvania seems to be slowly improving, and health experts are even optimistic that the near term forecast will see improvement. However, case rates have continued to see a steady rise in one demographic which had not been impacted significantly before: children.

In the final week of September, there were 7,352 cases among school-aged children — between the ages of 5 and 18 — which is 9.9 times more cases than the 745 cases seen over the same period of 2020.

It's a number that has continued to grow in the fall as the new school year gets underway. Two weeks ago, from Sept. 8 to Sept. 14, there were 7,218 cases in Pennsylvania children in that age group of 5 to 18.

Some of this seems to be attributable to the delta variant, officials say, which is more contagious and has been known to infect children at a higher rate. It could also be attributable to the fact that a large number of school-aged children are not vaccinated, as no vaccines have yet approved for use among children.

State officials said they're making preparations and will be ready when the FDA and CDC do approve a vaccine for children under 12.
