UPPER PROVIDENCE, PA — Two box trucks collided on a slippery Route 422 in Upper Providence on Tuesday, leaving several injured and causing the road to be briefly shut down as authorities responded.

The incident occurred at around 12:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes near the Route 29 interchange.

An off-duty police officer was the first to arrive on the scene, and he said that one of the occupants was unable to get out of the truck without help.

The Royersford Fire Department and EMS units responded to the scene, along with the Upper Providence Township Fire and Emergency Services and Black Rock Fire Company.

The box truck with the trapped victim had come to a stop at a steep angle on the embankment, making the rescue tricky. Complicating matters was the steady rainfall, as well as the soft and slippery ground.

Crews were able to stabilize the truck using support struts to prevent it from falling over. They were then able to extricate the victim using a long spine board and a Stokes basket to carry him to safety.

He was taken by ambulance, along with multiple other individuals, for treatment of his injuries. The condition of the individuals was not immediately available early Wednesday, but the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The Collegeville Fire Company, Lower Providence Fire Company, and Lower Providence EMS also assisted on the scene.
