SF 6th-Graders Finish 2nd Part of Fused Glass Project

Spring-Ford Sixth-Grade Students Complete Second Phase of Fused Glass Art Project for the 5-6 Grade Center

The following release was submitted by Phil Ellingsworth Jr., representing the Spring-Ford Area School District:

ROYERSFORD — sixth-grade art students recently completed a glass tile “window” for their building, continuing a that began in the fall with their fifth-grade counterparts.

Sixth-grade students in Cheryl Kramer’s art class began the second phase of the in March. With the help of professional Philadelphia mosaic artist Jessica Gorlin Liddell, students created individual tiles of colored glass that complemented the designs that were created earlier. Once the students completed the design phase, Liddell returned them to her glass studio for firing, also known as “fusing.”

Robyn Burckhardt, Art’s Alive! Program co-coordinator, said the project allowed students to think critically and work together to create a large-scale work of art that would be seen by all who visit the building. The students like to see the inherent transparency of the glass, which allows light to flow through it.

“Students enjoyed the opportunity to rely on their prior understanding of design skills of symmetry and balance. Each one is unique and unlike any other,” Burckhardt said. “The brightly designed panels were installed to offer maximum visibility by students, parents and the community.”
