Spring-Ford approves new super, $123M preliminary budget
2011-12 budget includes 3.23 percent property tax hike; board approves contract for Dr. David Goodin.
The board of the Spring-Ford Area School District tonight approved a $123M preliminary budget that includes a 3.23 percent property tax increase.
If the budget is finalized on June 20, property owners in the district will pay an additional 76 cents in tax on every $1,000 of assessed value. A property assessed at $200,000 will see a $152 tax increase in 2011-12.
Board solicitor Marc Davis pointed out that a residential property assessed at $200,000 typically has a market value of about $375,000.

"No need to make it [the tax hike] seem worse than it is," Davis said.
Dr. Marsha Hurda, district superintendent, said the district "had come a long way" during the budget process, which had "involved a lot of pain and suffering."

The board also approved the contract of Dr. David Goodin, who will succeed Hurda when she retires in July. Goodin's contract runs through June 30, 2015. He will initially earn $165,000 per year and will receive a maximum of $5,000 to relocate to the area from western Pennsylvania, where he is superintendent of the Connellsville Area School District.
