Spring-Ford Game of the Week

A look at the top games of the week in Spring-Ford High School sports

Boys Basketball Drops a Close One in Overtime

The boys basketball team went on the road Thursday night to face Abington High School. The Galloping Ghosts are now 9-3 on the season after the 54-51 overtime victory. The Rams are back at .500 at 7-7.

"I was really happy with our effort," said head coach Mike Young. "If we had executed a little bit better down the stretch, we should have won the game."

The game had lots of excitement, with the Rams leading much of the way, even capturing a 9-point lead in the fourth quarter that would be thwarted by Michael Griffin of the Ghosts.

"We knew he could shoot," Young said. "We just didn't get out on him. Playing a little bit away, sometimes you don't get as many calls as you'd like either in the second half, but that's what you get when you play on the road."

With the game tied at 45 with just a few seconds to go, Spring-Ford junior Zameer McDowell put the winning 2-pointer in the basket, but was subsequently called for a double dribble. That would end regulation.

Tied at 49 halfway into the 4-minute overtime, Abington went on a 4-point run, disrupting the Rams chances at a late scoring effort themselves. The boys couldn't regain the lead and lost the game by three.

Standing out for the Rams was senior Darryl Branch, who had seven points in the contest and 10 rebounds.

"He played really well," Young said. "He had a few shots there in the fourth quarter that he's capable of making. They just didn't go down. We'll definitely have him take those shots at any time. I was happy with how our guys responded. [Justin] DeLuzio and [Drew] Kakareka played really well for us down the stretch."

The boys will hope to boost themselves back over .500 against North Penn on Saturday.

"Hopefully," Young concluded. "They're a tough team. Saturday afternoon. I think we're in a good mental state and I think we'll stay positive through it."
