Spring-Ford prom-goers warned against texting while driving

Two local businesses are distributing thumb bands at the post-prom party with the message "It Can Wait."

A pair of local businesses have teamed up to distribute an important message to local high school students on prom night: whatever you need to text to your friend can wait until your hands are off the wheel.

Rick Pizzico of Pizzico Sign Company in Royersford and Chris Mancini, general manager of Fred Beans Nissan of Limerick, thought the rite of passage offered by prom night would be the ideal time to focus on adult behavior and responsibility—specifically, to remind teens to drive safely at all times.

The dealership and the sign company have collaborated to distribute a special version of the popular silicone thumb bands at the Spring-Ford post-prom event. The stretchy blue bands—600 of them—are embossed with the phrase, “It Can Wait.”

“We thought this would be great for post-prom, a reminder to the kids not to text while driving, to postpone it until they can pull over and stop the car,” said Pizzico. “It can also remind them to put off doing any of the unsafe behaviors that distract the driver, whether it’s playing with the music, grabbing something from the back seat, turning to talk to a passenger, or just generally goofing around.”

“A thumb band like this might be all they need as a nudge to do the safe thing,” said Mancini. “If it makes the difference between being at graduation or not, between recalling a prom with joy or with regret, then it is certainly worth it.”

The thumb bands will be available at a special display at each post-prom party.
