Standout Spring-Ford Students Honored

The students have reached the finalist stage in two different National Merit Scholarship Corporation programs.

Three Spring-Ford High School students who have reached the finalist stage in programs sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation were honored by the district's school board last night for their academic achievements.

Amber K. Muhammad, a senior, was announced as a finalist for a 2011 National Achievement Scholarship.

"As a junior, [Amber] joined more than 1.3 million other juniors in the 2009 PSAT National Merit Scholarship qualifying test. Amber's achievement on the PSAT made her a semifinalist. As a semifinalist, Amber had to fulfill several requirements to become a finalist. Spring-Ford is very proud of Amber. The board of school directors would like to recognize her and her parents for her achievement tonight," said Douglas M. Kent, 12th Grade House Principal.

Kevin R. Chang and Nina M. Kennedy, also seniors, were announced as finalists in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship program.

"Kevin and Nina's performance on the PSAT made them semifinalists [in the program], a group that represents less than 1% of the entrants," Kent said.

Kent said that each of the students are eligible for a monetary award, referring to one of the $2500 scholarships presented to winners by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

"National Merit Scholarship students are academic champions who will be the leaders of tomorrow," Kent said.
