This Week at the Library: National Library Card Sign-Up Month

The library has some exciting new things going on... and the return to regular school year programming!

I got distracted last week with starting up preschool storytimes and missed the “This Week at the Library” post, but trust me, we’ve been busy!

. We’ve been spreading the word and hope to get out into the community to share more about the value of having a library card, so let us know if you’d like us to come visit your group. This month, everyone who signs up for a new library card will be thrown in a raffle for a $25 gift card to Pickles Steakhouse. Encourage your family, friends or neighbors to sign up if they haven’t… and maybe they’ll take you out to Pickles if they win! It’s a great time to get your child a card at the start of the school year, too. Our 4-year-old friend Katie did, and then posed for the most adorable first library card picture, which got quite a few likes on our Facebook page this past week!

We also . But we’ve been pinning new items to the collection from adult, children and young adult books, to DVDs and music. We’ve posted eBook, social media and library support information. And if you have kids or grandkids, we have storytime theme boards on various topics that you can use to have a storytime of your own at home, complete with book, craft and activity suggestions! If you’re on Pinterest, follow some or all of the boards. If you’re not, bookmark the page!

Tuesday: 4 year old storytimes, 10:30am and 12:30pm. Advanced registration is required for storytimes, as there’s a limit to how many kids I can fit into the program room, plus advanced registration helps me prepare for the right number of kids… not ending up “short” or wasting craft supplies when people don’t show, and there’s an age cutoff date of 9/12 based on the East Penn School District. Contact us if you’re interested.

Wednesday: 3 year old storytimes, 10:30am and 12:30pm. Again, advanced registration is required for storytimes, for the same reasons as above.

Adult Book Club, 10:30am, LMT Building “Ballroom”.  This month’s book is Ship of Fools by Katherine Ann Porter. Contact the library for more details.

Thursday: 2 year old storytimes, 10:30am and 12:30pm. Again, advanced registration is required for storytimes.

Intro to Computer Basics, Level 2. 11am-1pm. Topics will include how to cut and paste, file management, webpage toolbar functions, control panel functions, and simple web searches. Advanced registration and $5 class fee required.

Saturday: Daddy and Me Storytime, ages 2-6, 10:30am, advanced registration required. A fun, low-key time for kids and dads only! No moms allowed! We’ll read some stories and do a simple craft.

Also, in case you didn’t see , we won a $2,500 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities! We're pretty excited about the "bigness" of this! Community partners for these events include ArtsQuest, Martin Guitars, Muhlenberg College and more! Stay tuned for some impressive programming across the Lehigh Valley, sponsored by your very own library.

So like you, we're getting back into the swing of the school year routine. We hope to see you out sometime this week!
