HazMat Crews Called for Chemical Scare Monday

A portion of Schantz Road in Lower Macungie was closed Monday afternoon as officials investigated a substance suspected to be a chemical, according to published reports.

A hazardous materials team was called to a self-storage facility in Lower Macungie Monday afternoon to investigate an unknown substance in containers, but the chemical found posed no immediate danger, according to published reports.

Six one-gallon containers at the facility at 299 Schantz Road were reported to contain the substance, according to a report on wfmz.com.  The HazMat team was on the scene at 1:30 p.m.

Lehigh County Emergency Services Director Scott Lindenmuth told lehighvalleylive.com the substance was suspected to be a chemical, methylene, but the form wasn't immediately known.

The chemical was sealed in its containers, and the HazMat team determined there was no immediate threat, the report said.

Officials closed a section of Schantz Road, from Cetronia Road to Hamilton Boulevard, for about three hours while crews investigated. The road was reopened about 4:15 p.m., said Lower Macungie Emergency Management Coordinator Ben Galiardo.

It was not immediately known who was storing the containers there, or why.
