Macungie Lacks Emergency Distribution Center

Updating the Emergency Management Plan is progressing with the search for an accessible hub in the event of a catastrophic event.

Macungie Council member David Boyko reported at the June 20 meeting on the progress of the development of an Emergency Management Plan in Macungie Borough.

Boyko said he is currently in the process of searching for a site to use as a distribution center in the event of a catastrophic event which would shut down the borough’s electric service.  “People can then pick up needed supplies, such as water and MRE’s (meals ready to eat),” he said.

“A site must be off the main streets where traffic can be funneled in,” he said.  “It needs to have the capacity to be lit in dark hours and to get a forklift in so supplies can be unloaded.”

A memorandum of understanding for a particular location and for the providers of any services that may be needed will need to be written in order to be ready in the unlikely event of a catastrophic emergency, he added.

Possible sites include Macungie Memorial Park and Eyer Middle School, which is in Lower Macungie Township.  Boyko plans to check with the East Penn School District and Lower Macungie Township for permission to use the school as an emergency site provided it is not currently listed as a site for either one of them.
