Whiz Kid: Sabino Basso

This fifth grader has a black belt in Kung Fu.

Name:  Sabino Basso 

School:  Fifth-grader at , Emmaus

Accomplishment:  He earned his first level black belt in Kung Fu.

Key to Awesomeness:  Sabino has been a busy young man for the past five years—he recently earned his first level black belt and is now working toward his second level.

  • The history of Kung Fu and karate
  • How to defend himself during a confrontation
  • How to correctly use force when needed
  • Self-discipline and respect
  • How to use the power of voice when confronted

Sabino also his knowledge of Kung Fu by listing the  different levels/belts, some of which have an animal and element associated with it:

  • white—no animal or element with this belt
  • yellow—tiger with the element fire
  • green—mantis with the element wood
  • red—no animal or element with this belt, but is called grappling and works on ground moves
  • blue—crane with the element of water
  • silver—snake with the element of metal
  • black—dragon with the element of earth (this level has several more levels)

The Lower Macungie Township resident also participates in Kung Fu tournaments and performances throughout the year.

When he’s not working on his Kung Fu moves, Sabino enjoys playing defense on the Lower Macungie Youth Association’s Lacrosse team. He also likes swimming especially since the summer has been so hot.
