Representative Schwartz to Hold Medicare Fraud Prevention Workshop

To protect seniors, Rep. Allyson Schwartz will host "Playing it Safe: A Workshop on Medicare Fraud Prevention" on Monday, Oct. 24.

Medicare's open enrollment period, which begins on Saturday, Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, is a chance for scammers to take advantage of seniors, according to a press release from Representative Allyson Schwartz.

In order to education and to better protect seniors, Schwartz will host a workshop on Monday, Oct. 24, at the Klein Branch Jewish Community Center in Philadelphia (located at 10100 Jamison Ave.).

Seniors who are seeking information about and making changes to their benefits are susceptible to fraud, according to the release, and should attend “Playing it Safe: A Workshop on Medicare Fraud Prevention.” The workshop will teach seniors and their families to learn how to protect their medical information and history, keep track of statements and bills, detect common fraud schemes and how to report fraud and abuse.

"Fraud costs Medicare billions of dollars each year and can result in higher Medicare premiums, deductibles and copayments for seniors," the press release from Rep. Schwartz said. "Losses due to fraud may also prevent Medicare from offering more services and better coverage in the future."

The workshop, which will go from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Oct. 24, is free and open to the public.
