150 Firefighters Battle Back Blaze At Lower Providence Business

The multi-alarm fire sent huge clouds of smoke into the air as hundreds of firefighers swarmed to the area to contain the damage.

LOWER PROVIDENCE, PA — A multi-alarm blaze in Montgomery County over the weekend drew a massive response from area firefighters who swarmed to the area to contain the damage. Thanks to heroics from first responders, no one was injured and nearby businesses were spared significant harm.

The fire began at around 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Salter's Patio Fireplace and Grill, and Ski Shop, located on 3130 Ridge Pike in the Colonial Shopping Center.

Crews noticed flames at the rear of the building when they first arrived, and began to attack the fire inside the building. They encountered "intense heat and zero visibility," officials said, forcing them to beat back a retreat.

It was at this time that one firefighter became disoriented and did not make it out of the building. Crews rushed back in, located him, and brought him out safely.

Due to the strength of the fire, crews then took a "defensive" position outside of the building to prevent the fire from damaging the nearby businesses.

In order to prevent a water shortage, emergency responders activated a water supply task force, working with PA American Water and a larger hose and tankers to bring additional water to the area.

However, due to the large amount of water used, additional water had to be trucked in from Collegeville.

The fire was finally brought under control by around 2:30 p.m.

Numerous nearby businesses were inspected by the county health department and were able to open on Sunday. They include: AMG Beauty Bar, Kriebel’s Bakery, Biryani City Restaurant, Cosmetic Family Dentistry, Redeemer Church Office, Fairy Tails Dog Grooming Salon, Nook & Kranny 2 Kafe, and Main Street Pizzeria.

Salter's is closed until further notice.

Crews from Montgomery, Chester, Berks, and Bucks counties provided more than 150 firefighters to the scene from dozens of municipalities.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear and is currently under investigation by the Lower Providence Township fire marshals. If you have any information or photos, contact Charles DeFrangesco at firemarshal@lowerprovidence.org.
