An exciting program exploring the history of the Jews in the United States from their beginnings in 1654 to the present. Some of the synagogues included in this program include the Spanish & Portuguese Congregation in New York; the Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island; Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco (organized by the "gold-rush" Jews); recycled 19th century synagogues in Pittsburgh and the Lower East Side; and modern synagogues designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and Percival Goodman in Elkins Park, PA and Southfield, MI. We will also visit the exquisite Cuban Hebrew Congregation in Miami Beach and the Gumenick Chapel with its glorious Belgian stained-glass windows in Miami, Florida. This lecture program is based on Oscar Israelowitz's book, "Synagogues of the United States."
Presented by Oscar Israelowitz.
Mr. Israelowitz is an author, architectural consultant, professional photographer, travel columnist, and tour guide of Jewish neighborhoods in New York City.
