According to Karen M. Hegedus, recreation superintendent, Lower Providence Township, during the summer months, the department offers a seven-week summer camp program, Camp Perkiomy for children ages 6 – 13 years at Arrowhead Elementary, Audubon Elementary and Eagleville Elementary schools.
“There is a weekly theme and activities, trips and games are based around the theme," said Hegedus.

Also offered are several week-long specialty camps that include: KidzArt Camp, Pony Share Camp, Science Explorers Camp and UK Elite Camp.
There are still spots available for mini-camps in August.
Hegedus said Camp Perkiomy is the Township’s largest summer program which encompasses 3 camp sites and a total of 245 campers. The weeks are themed and the activities, games and trips are all designed around the weekly theme.
Some of the themes this summer included Nature Explorers with a field trip to Academy of Natural Sciences, Treasure Hunters and the campers visited Crystal Cave, Moovin’ & Groovin’ with a field trip to Philly Rock Gym and Tropical Paradise with a trip to Coco Key Water Resort, she said.
The camp is quite popular and registration opens in January.
“Next year, we will be adding to the Camp Perkiomy program with a new pre-school summer camp and teen summer camp designed especially for those age groups. Summer camp information guides are available in January and registration begins in February for Camp Perkiomy,” Hegedus said.
In addition to camps, the department also offers discounted movie and amusement parks tickets to purchase for families to enjoy time together.
There are also special events planned for children and the community-at-large. The July 4th celebration included fireworks, and in August, car show event at Ridge Pike Plaza is sure to be a hit.
This year the date is Friday, Aug. 17 from 5-9 p.m.
Bringing the community together and promoting family time is something that Hegedus said is a goal.
“The Lower Providence Township Parks and Recreation Department strives to provide professional, multi-faceted leisure services to the community,” she said. “Our mission is based on a passion for enriching the lives of our residents through recreation, creating natural beauty and maintaining a safe, clean park environment. We foster the responsibility for developing, supporting and administering recreational activities and facilities that enhance the quality of life for all our residents.”
As recreation superintendent, Hegedus said her job is to coordinate the development, implementation and supervision of the Township’s recreation programs and events.
“Essentially, I organize, administer, supervise and evaluate a year-round schedule of recreation programs and leisure opportunities for all residents,” she added. “I design recreation opportunities for all ages from pre-school children to senior adults.”
