Phillies To Debut Pope Francis Baseball Cards

In anticipation of Pope Francis’ visit to area on September 26 and 27, there has been no shortage of memorabilia produced to honor the head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Beers, bobbleheads, fake robots, just to name a few, have graced the headlines in the past week.

Now, add baseball cards to that list.

The Phillies announced on Tuesday that a commemorative Pope Francis rookie card would be available at the Wednesday night game against the Nationals.

The card will be available for free at the first base and third base kiosks in Citizens Bank Park during the game.

On the back of the card, his statistics will be featured like they would be for a professional player, including name, birthdate, position, papal debut, education, and other names.

The Phillies are hoping to avoid a sweep from the Nationals after dropping the past two games. Wednesday’s matchup starts at 7:05 p.m.

There has been no word yet regarding whether or not Francis will suit up for the Phillies when he comes to town, nor what position he would play.
