Apply to Eric Hanson Memorial Scholarship Fund

Lower Southampton Athletic Association, in conjuction with the Feasterville Business Association, will be awarding three $500 scholarships to Lower Southampton students. The application deadline is April 1.

Scholarship applicants should currently be involved in a sports activity, either at the high school or club level, or be performing volunteer work for the LSAA. In addition, they must have played in LSAA programs or the GALS softball program for at least three years.

According to the scholarship application posted on the township website, the student applicants must be a senior in the top half of his or her high school graduating class and be able to substantiate his or her ability to be a leader on the field. The application requires the student to submit a copy of the applicant's high school transcript and a letter from either a coach and/or an athletic director substantiating leadership and sports recognitions.

The scholarship is not available to any student who has been awarded a full scholarship from a college or university.

Scholarship winners will be selected by the Feasterville Business Association. They will receive the scholarship award sometime in May.

The Eric Hanson Memorial Scholarship was awarded from 1994 until about 1998, and LSAA and the FBA decided to bring the scholarship back last year, former LSAA president Joe Olenski said.

Olenski said that he asked the LSAA board, including current President Tony Crooks, if they could bring back the scholarships last year. The board unanimously agreed and Olenski offered to organize the effort.

Eric Hanson, who the scholarship fund is named after, was tragically killed in a car accident on Brownsville Road in Trevose in 1991, Olenski said. His parents were heavily involved in the LSAA before his death, Olenski explained.
