Rachel Platten: The ABC’s Of Creating A Work Of Art
What do you do when someone asks you to write the theme song for ABC Family's new series Jane By Design?
Rachel Platten’s music is a blissful shaft of sunlight streaming through your window that both brightens and warms your life. What better plan for a day than to bask and let Platten’s magic tingle your spirit till you feel like you could face the day with a grin and accomplish anything?
Admittedly, I might be gushing just a little, but I’m not the only one who experiences a refreshing kind of motivating bliss when listening to this singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/beatboxer’s tracks. ABC Family’s new original series, Jane By Design, features Rachel’s song, “Work of Art,” as its theme!
“One of the producers of the show heard my single, "1,000 ships," on The Pulse on Sirius/XM Radio and felt the vibe of that song as well as my songwriting really fit the tone of the show. They reached out to my management and asked me to take a stab at writing the theme song.”
Jane By Design is a perfect fit for Rachel’s brand of infectious, inspirational music. The series stars Erica Dasher as Jane Quimby, an awkward teen who stumbles into the world of high fashion and begins leading a double life. Jane struggles to balance her dual lives while trying to understand who she really is, and, in the process, she begins to discover who she was meant to be.
“Since the song needed to be very specific for the show, I felt I could best accomplish that by starting from scratch,” Platten expressed. “The producers sent me three episodes to watch — I felt quite special ;) — to get a feel for the show, then left it to me to really take the song in the direction I felt best embodied not only the show, but Jane herself. I brought an idea of it to my friends, Sons of Radio, and we crafted "Work Of Art" together from that!”
“I also was able to ask a lot of questions about Jane's character. It was a lot of fun to have an opportunity that I could relate to so authentically. I'm really proud of the song and I see a lot of myself in Jane’s character. Her quest to balance insecurity with a gritty determination to follow her dreams really resonates within me.”
