NHS Nature Club Competes in Bucks County Envirothon

The Neshaminy High School's Nature Club traveled to New Hope's Honey Hollow Nature Center to compete in the Bucks County Envirothon.

According to the school district website, the Nature Club, which is advised by Brian Suter and Jim Murray, placed first overall among all competing county schools. This is the ninth time in 10 years that Neshaminy has won this competition.

The team was lead by senior Evan Gracie and the team included Julia Thee, Nick Macelko, Tyler Kitchenman and Miranda Cento.

In addition to achieving the highest score overall, the Neshaminy team scored the highest total points in three of five categories: forestry, wildlife and aquatics. A special ceremony at the conclusion of the Envirothon honored the team for each of these accomplishments. For forestry, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will be awarding a tree to be planted on Neshaminy’s campus in the team’s honor.

For aquatics, the Pennsylvania Fish Commission awarded a subscription to the commission’s monthly journal to each of the team members. In recognition for their performance on the wildlife component, the Pennsylvania Game Commission awarded each student the annual commemorative Game Commission patch.

According to the district website, the Envirothon pits teams from school districts across the county against each other to test their knowledge in the areas of soil science, forestry, wildlife, aquatics, and a special topic that changes annually, which was non-point source pollution this year.

The student team will now compete at the State Envirothon at the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown May 22 and 23.
