Second Teacher Strike to Affect Senior Final Exams

Neshaminy High School seniors were scheduled to take final exams June 4 through June 8. However, the exam schedule will be affected

According to the school district website, seniors will be exempt from the exams missed due to the strike and will walk in the graduation ceremony. However, the district is urging students to continue preparing for their finals in case the teachers do not go on strike.

Seniors' final grades will be calculated after graduation based on the fourth marking period grades.

Seniors will have the option to take their exams for any course they received an exemption for. Check the final exam schedule at www.neshaminy.org/nhs for dates and times. The dates and times will not be available until after the strike has ended and underclassmen final exams are rescheduled. If a senior student choses this option, the need to call the high school at 215-809-6101 with their name, the name of the course and the teacher for each final exam they wish to take.

The high school's graduation ceremony is still scheduled for June 13 at 6:30 p.m. where seniors will receive their diploma covers. Seniors will have graduation practice Monday, June 11. According to the district website, only inclement weather will change these dates.

Should the teachers go on strike, the district has requested a five hour "cease fire" from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on graduation day in order to focus on the graduates and their families. 

"We can only hope teachers will respect the importance and intended focus of that evening and grant us the 5 hours needed to celebrate the 117^th commencement with the Class of 2012 and their families and friends," as posted on the district website. The district is also asking that the community help to keep the focus on the graduates by not planning any type of counter protest or picketing.

Diplomas will be available to be picked up from the high school during the week of June 25. Diplomas not picked up will be mailed home.

Seniors will only have to return to school after graduation if they wish to take a missed final exam. In addition, final exams will be adjusted so that seniors will not be held accountable for material they did not learn due to the strike.

Underclassmen exams will not be cancelled. Students that may have conflicts with an adjusted final exam schedule, they will have the option to take exams early or in July. If this is the case, parents should call the high school at 215-809-6101 stating that their son or daughter has a final exam conflict.

Absences from school after June 15 need to be pre-approved.
