Malvern, Pa.--- A new $4.5 million specialty and trauma care veterinary hospital, scheduled to open in July, will be the largest staffed and equipped pet medical center in Chester County, enabling the hospital to bring a level of care found at human hospitals to dogs and cats.

Hope Veterinary Specialists’ (VS) 21,000 square-foot facility at 40 Three Tun Rd. will have nearly two dozen veterinary medicine specialists on staff, three operating rooms, eight procedure rooms, 13 exam rooms, a dedicated ICU (intensive care unit), 75 patient rooms, cages or runs, and the latest in imaging technology. “There is a growing trend at animal hospitals, regionally and nationally, towards   24-hour emergency and trauma care, as well as comprehensive medical treatment,” said Hope VS Medical Director and Cardiologist Dennis Burkett, VMD; Ph.D.; Diplomate, ACVECC; ACVIM. “Our patients should have the same level of medical care as their owners.”

In fact, the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC), of which Dr. Burkett is past president, recently kicked off a national pilot program to create a network of veterinary trauma centers.

“Our staff believes the veterinary emergency, critical care and specialty centers of the future will be composed of veterinary care teams,” Dr. Burkett said. “These teams will include highly-skilled, experienced and equipped veterinarians, veterinary nurses, and managers who will set the standard for compassion and excellence.”

Hope VS offers specialty care in:

  • Cardiology
  • Dermatology
  • Emergency Medicine and Critical Care
  • Internal Medicine
  • Radiology, Interventional Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging
  • Neurology
  • Oncology
  • Surgery

Hope VS also needed a larger facility because it had reached capacity with 13,000 clients and 12,000 client visits annually, Dr. Burkett said. The new hospital is more than double the size of the original 9,600 square-foot facility in Malvern. It is one of about 10 veterinary hospitals in the region.

The expanded medical center will also add more jobs to the area, as its staff will be increased by 25 percent to a total of approximately 80, including nurses, nursing assistants and client specialists.

In addition, the new facility will allow Hope VS to offer more continuing medical education (CME) and training programs, said Dr. Burkett. This year, Hope VS plans to start an innovative animal CPR training program once the hospital obtains approval by ACVECC, he noted.
