PA Young Birder Meeting next Wednesday Aug. 22!
Did you know the Willistown Conservation Trust has a PA Young Birders club (next meeting is next week!) and a beautiful bird blog?

This month's PAYB meeting, "Farm, Birds and Bugs", is this coming Wednesday, August 22, 6:00-7:30 pm at Rushton Woods Preserve and Farm. It will be another exciting one with a very special guest speaker, John Black, Master Naturalist for Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey. He is also on the Board of Directors for the Atlantic Audubon Society and describes himself as a long-haired, tree-hugging, dirt worshiping environmentalist!
He will be sharing with us his vast knowledge about the natural world, especially native plants and the individual insects (and spiders!) that depend on particular plant species. "You can't learn about plants without also learning about the insects that they host", says John Black. And of course we, as PA Young Birders, know that the plants and insects are very important to the birds as well! During this meeting, we will discover how the sustainability of Rushton Farm makes it a special place for people, birds and insects alike with a special emphasis on the king of all insects, the Monarch Butterfly. John Black will tell you everything there is to know about monarchs (and stuff you didn't want to know!), and we will get very close looks at the various stages of their incredible lives.
Please RSVP by Wednesday afternoon to me at bhg@wctrust.org or call me at 610-353-2562 ext.20. All children ages 8-12 welcome!

Children should wear light weight pants and closed-toed shoes in order to be able to explore the milkweed fields without worrying about poison ivy and "scratchy" plants. Mosquito repellant wouldn't hurt either if you're concerned, although I have not noticed them too much at Rushton.
Also, please check out the Willistown Conservation Trust's bird blog at wctbirds.wordpress.com to see more beautiful pictures of Willistown birds, learn all about birds and what we are doing for them, and keep track of what's been happening at WCT's bird banding station! Just enter your email address on the blog page to subscribe (for free) and receive an email every time I update the bird blog.
