Charlestown Considering Renewable Energy Resolution
Parts of the resolution include updating policies as new tech becomes available, looking into cooperative energy purchasing, and more.
CHARLESTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — In an effort to be more ecologically friendly, Charlestown Township supervisors are considering adopting a Clean Energy Resolution.
At its upcoming meeting on July 1, the Board of Supervisors will consider adoption the resolution, which will push for greener energy sources and make the township continuously update its renewable energy policies as new technology is made available.
The resolution, in part, "recognizes the safe use of renewable energy such as wind, solar and hydroelectric has the potential to lower electricity costs while creating a positive environmental impact through reduction of greenhouse gas, air, water, and soil pollution."

Ten points in the resolution lay out specific goals for the township as it moves toward using renewable energy.

- Create and prioritize a list of goals to achieve clean electrification and alternative heating/cooling which are attainable, economical, and sustainable.
- Review existing ordinances and construction standards to consider revisions that promote the goal of clean, renewable energy and encourage residents and businesses to use the most energy efficient means possible.
- Work to adopt ordinances that promote the use of renewable energy that is effective, feasible and aesthetically acceptable for the welfare of all residents.
- Work to continuously revise, update and amend Township ordinances as technology and experience becomes available.
- Work to facilitate the drafting and periodic revision of a plan to fulfill these objectives to include interim milestones and such other metrics that are measurable and attainable.
- Cooperate with state, county, other municipalities, the Phoenixville Regional Planning Commission (PRPC), the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) to transition to clean and renewable energy with electricity being the first target.
- Investigate cooperative energy purchasing opportunities.
- Educate and encourage participation in this effort from residents, businesses, and regional groups.
- Support county or regional efforts to draft a plan for transition to clean energy over time.
- Call on the State of Pennsylvania to adopt codes and standards to increase energy efficiency of buildings and appliances and to take actions that will facilitate and encourage use of renewable energy
