Giampetro Wins Hurdles at Hill School Invitational

Villa Maria winter track got underway at Ursinus College this week.

COLLEGEVILLE—Anyone who has attended an area indoor track meet in the past five years will attest to one thing: When it comes to the 55-meter hurdles, Methacton dominates.

Apparently, senior Grace Giampetro did not get the memo that one of the trio of Methacton runners was expeced to claim victory at The Hill School Invitational held at the Floy Lewis Bakes Field House on the campus of Ursinus College Thursday.

After posting a third-place qualifying time of 9.35 seconds, sandwiched between the aforementioned Warriors group of Jenny Martin (9.33), Lizzy Shade (9.37) and Nikki Serratore (9.41), Giampetro shaved a quarter-second off her time snaring the event win with a finals run of 9.10 finishing ahead of Martin’s time of 9.11.

“I don’t know what happened; I just felt really good today,” said Giampetro, who got a break from the pole vault because of an equipment issue. “Coach was working with me on my starts. I have a tendency to pop right up. He is working with me on staying lower and coming up slowly as I get to the first hurdle.”

“This is really our first week together,” said Hurricanes coach Phil Genther. “To come in here at a meet of this size and win the event is a great way to start the season. We are a little short on runners this season as opposed to years past, but we have a great group of girls that work very hard.”

The hard work put in thus far also paid off for Villa in the 55-meter dash and 200-meter run, with field hockey state finalist Caroline Troncelliti finishing 6th in the 200-meter run, out of a field of more than 50 girls, with a time of 27.93. Troncelliti missed qualifying for the finals in the 55-meter dash as she claimed seventh overall with a time 7.70, just .02 out of the championship run.

The Hurricanes also made an impact in the distance races as Hailey Hutcheson (2:41.92) and Melissa Ostien (2:48.18) claimed 11th and 20th overall, respectively, in the 800-meter run. Rachel Fulton’s time of 5:57.91 was good enough for tenth-place in the mile.

Lauren Murphy used a great start to her advantage, fueling a run of 12:03.53 in the 3,000-meter run, rounding out a strong team effort in the first meet of the season.
