Lightning Strike Kills Boy Swimming in Pa. Creek

There is no outdoor location that is safe during a thunderstorm, the National Weather Service says.

A boy was killed Sunday when he was struck by lightning while swimming in a Central Pennsylvania.

Three boys were swimming Sunday in Conowingo Creek in Fulton Township, Lancaster County, Lancaster Newspapers reported, when a storm moved through the area.

The boy, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead Sunday night at Hershey Medical Center, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. A second boy remained hospitalized Monday at Hershey Medical Center; the third boy apparently was unharmed.

There is no outdoor location that is safe during a thunderstorm, the National Weather Service says; you should always “stop what you are doing and get to a safe place immediately.”

The NWS says that if you hear thunder, the storm is within 10 miles of you. Lightning strikes are possible within 10 miles of a thunderstorm, even if it’s not raining where you are.
