Maintaining a Healthy and Fire Safe Community

East Whiteland Township is dedicated to maintaining a safe, healthy, and pleasant community atmosphere for its residents, and you can help!

At East Whiteland Township, your health and safety is important to us. While we understand that campfires and other forms of open burning can be enjoyable or provide a useful way of disposing of unwanted vegetation, these activities can also increase the chances of igniting an uncontrolled fire, create health concerns, or simply become a nuisance to others in the general vicinity.

In order to be mindful of these concerns, East Whiteland Township maintains and enforces an open burning ordinance. Currently, the township regulates the types of outdoor and open burning to provide for the health, safety, and general welfare of its citizens as follows:

-Open burning and outdoor burning of refuse, construction materials, and demolition waste is prohibited

-The open burning of natural materials is prohibited (natural materials includes trees, logs, brush, stumps, leaves, and grass clippings)

There are specific situations where open or outdoor burning may be permitted upon receipt of an operational permit from the township Fire Marshal. Additionally, there are strict regulations that pertain to the use of campfires, bonfires, and patio wood-burning units.

The ordinance does not apply to grilling or cooking food using charcoal, wood, propane, or natural gas in cooking or grilling appliances.
