“While celebrating our heritage is certainly of great value we are in this country as Americans,” the petition reads. “One can celebrate our nation and our own heritage without being exclusive. We are offended that America Day has been removed from Spirit Week at Great Valley High School and are seeking to have it restored immediately in honor of our great nation.”
The petition, launched by Ross Kennedy, had 986 out of a goal of 1,000 signatures as of Monday morning. It was launched on Friday.

“I recognize that each individual possesses a heritage that is valuable and has contributed to the great nation that America is today,” the petition continues. “I do not believe celebrating our great nation for its liberty and freedom is in any way offensive. Conversely, I hold fast to the idea that eliminating America Day from Spirit Week is offensive to all Americans and particularly to those who have died defending its freedoms.”
School officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this story.
