Historic Sugartown is delighted to announce that our highly anticipated vintage baseball program, rained out in June, has been rescheduled! Bring out your picnic blanket and chairs to enjoy an evening with the Brandywine Base Ball Club on Historic Sugartown’s grounds! The players will share the history of their club and baseball in America, and offer visitors a chance to check out the vintage and reproduction equipment the team uses today. Watch the team demonstrate an early version of the game called Townball; then have a chance to join in!

Come early when doors open at 6:00PM and bring a picnic dinner if you wish! Enjoy a cold brew from West Chester’s Levante Brewing Company, as well as iced tea, lemonade, popcorn, and soft pretzels from Philly Pretzel Factory of Lionville. Stroll the grounds and visit the c. 1805 William Garrett House to view a temporary exhibit of vintage baseball ephemera on loan from the Chester County Historical Society. Admission & Directions: $10 Adults, $6 Children (ages 3-17yrs), Children ages 2 and younger admitted free. Includes program, exhibit, and refreshments.

The program will take place in the field behind Historic Sugartown’s c. 1805 William Garrett House at 260 Spring Road, Malvern, PA

About the Brandywine Base Ball Club of West Chester

Throughout the 1850s and 60s, many of the first amateur baseball clubs were organized in the Mid-Atlantic States. The “Brandywiners” were a well-known West Chester club that formed in 1865. After more than a 135-year absence, the Brandywine Base Ball Club of West Chester was revived in the winter of 2013. The modern club continues the great traditions of the original amateur ball clubs of the 1860s and 1870s.

Historic Sugartown, Inc. inspires the community to engage with the past through authentic 19th-century experiences, participate in the village’s present life and protect it for the future. Historic Sugartown stewards 9.2 acres of land and nine historic structures, including 4.2 acres of open space under conservation easement with Willistown Conservation Trust. Historic Sugartown’s Carriage Museum interprets Chester County’s rich transportation heritage through a rare collection of historic carriages and sleighs in partnership with Chester County Historical Society. Historic Sugartown is open for guided tours on Saturdays, 11 am – 4 pm and Sundays, 1 – 4 pm from May through the 1st weekend in December. Tour admission: $5 Adults, $4 Seniors (60+ yrs), $3 Children (3 – 17 yrs). Children ages 2 and younger admitted free.
