Split Decisions for Great Valley Wrestlers

Great Valley's wrestling squad participated in the Eastern York Duals over the weekend and came home with a win and a loss.

The Patriots defeated Red Land, 35-33, but dropped a 34-30 match to Fairfield.

Against Red Land, Great Valley picked up a win at 103 when Raymond Colon's opponent forfeited. Nathan Green of Red Land won the first competition of the day at 112 when he decisioned Shane Ruhnke, 9-5, to cut the GV lead to 6-3.

In the 119, John Cassels landed a major decision over Joe Colonna, 14-2, but Red Land took the next two bouts. Devon Newcomer pinned Johnny Carnes in 42 seconds of the 125 and Jake Green decisioned Kevin Leslie in the 130 by a 6-0 final to give Red Land a 12-10 advantage.

Nick DeHaven picked up a forfeit win at 135 to move the Pats ahead 16-12. However, Clay Sterner got RL back on top, 18-16, when he pinned Colin Burke in 1:35 of the 140 bout.

That edge latest only a few minutes until Matthew DiSanto decisioned Rick Pugh 12-7 and the Pats lead again, 19-16. The trading of matches continued with Red Lion's Austin Hoover beating 152-pounder Steven LaBarge, 6-4, then the Pats' Tyler Haines won the 160 as he handed Ben Cameron a major decision, 6-4.

The rest of the night was a parade of forfeits that resulted in GV's 35-33 win. The Patriots won two weights — Miguel Hernandez at 171 and Brian Curless at 189 — while Billy Russell took the 215 and Kurt Wintermyer the 285 for Red Land.

In the match with Fairfield, the Knights bounced out to a 6-0 lead when Nicole Small decisioned Shane Ruhnke in the 103, 15-14, and Cameron Scalio won the 112 when he decisioned Jerome Nelson, 8-3.

Great Valley rebounded as both Cassels (119) and Carnes (125) won by forfeits to turn the tide in the Pats' favor, 12-6.

The Knights then went on a five-bout run to turn the entire match around. Wayne Wivell decisioned Leslie, 7-2, in the 130; Alex Randt pinned down the 135 and DeHaven in 1:44; Clay Kocsis took a major decision over DiSanto in the 140, 17-6; Nick Mort decisioned LaBarge, 17-6; and Kyle Flohr won the 52 by forfeit. When the smoke cleared, Fairfield held a 28-22 lead.

The Pats tried to climb back into the match as Tyler Haines took the 160 with a 1:08 fall of Jared Slaybaugh then Hernandez pinned Josh Hill in a blink of 40 seconds. Curless added a third straight pin at 115 when he decked Zachary Harris before Fairfield was awarded the 285 by forfeit and the 34-30 win.

Up next for Great Valley is the Section IV tournament on Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m. at Boyertown High School.
