Villa Maria Seventh Grader Places Third in Writing Competition

Congratulations to Villa Maria Academy seventh grader, Mary C., on her achievement in the Patriot’s Pen Writing Contest. Mary was awarded a certification of merit for placing in the top 3 out 107 essayists in the Patriot’s Pen “What Freedom Means to Me” writing competition and was noted for being “one of the best” ever read by the judges. Congratulations Mary!

Seventh Grade ELA teacher, Mrs. Nancy Buck encourages the girls to “take a shot” and enter some of the writing contests that she posts on her Moodle page so they can take advantage of amazing opportunities like this and practice their skills. “I am so proud of Mary on her accomplishment!”

Each year more than 125,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest. The first-place winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $50,000, with each first-place state winner receiving a minimum of $500 at the national level. The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. (https://www.vfw.org/PatriotsPen/)
