Broomall 10-Year-Old Boy Safe After Escaping Home At 1 a.m.

A young boy showed up at a gas station on West Chester Pike in Broomall Tuesday morning saying he was looking to catch a bus to Philadelphia, according to Marple Township Police.

Police were called to the BP gas station at 2562 West Chester Pike in Broomall at about 1:13 a.m., police said.

A clerk at the station said a young boy walked into the store, asked for money for a bus, leading the clerk to call police.

Officer Kyle Engelman showed up and talked with the boy, who was just 10 years old, police said.

The young boy initially was quiet with police and the store employee, not providing any real information as to why he left his home and wanted to head to the city.

But Engelman talked with the boy for about 20 minutes and learned the boy's reason for leaving.

"Engelman did a good job talking with the kid and got some information from him," Marple Township Police Sgt. Brandon Graeff said.

The boy told Engelman that he didn't like living in a rural area and related better with people in Philadelphia.

The child walked from his home on Deerfield Road to the gas station, which is about a mile-long walk, according to Google.

"He ran out of the home and tried to catch a bus to the city," Graeff said.

Luckily, Engelman eventually got the boy into his cruiser and took him home to parents who had no idea their child left the home.

"The parents didn't know he was gone because they were asleep," Graeff said.

Police said no crimes were committed and no charges will be filed in the case of the wandering boy.

Graeff said the parents were stunned to learn their son was yearning to head to the city.

"They had no idea he wanted to go to the city," Graeff said.

With the boy home safe and sound, maybe some more trips to Philadelphia are in order to satisfy his love of city life.
